At Blue Windmill Day Nursery in Rugby, outdoor play for early years helps little ones of all ages explore, test ideas, and build friendships. We encourage children to spend as much time as they like outside – toddling across the grass, balancing on logs, or spotting a ladybirds.
The natural world offers children something that four walls can’t: space to move freely, think creatively, and connect with one another. Our garden isn’t just a play area — it’s where curiosity takes root and friendships blossom.
Discovering the World, Step by Step
For our youngest children, the outdoors is an exciting world to be explored one careful step at a time. Learning to walk on uneven ground, feeling different textures underfoot, and watching the sky change colour all help them build confidence in their bodies and awareness of their surroundings.
Simple experiences — crawling after a ball, reaching for a flower, or hearing birdsong — support early physical development and encourage a sense of wonder.
Early Experiments and Outdoor Play for Early Years
As children become steadier on their feet, the garden becomes their laboratory. They test what happens when they pour water down a tube, pile sand into a bucket, or roll a tyre across the path. This kind of play is the very beginning of scientific thinking and problem-solving.
Outdoors, children learn to take appropriate risks — climbing, balancing, jumping — and experience the satisfaction of achieving something new. Each small success builds confidence, resilience, and pride in their own capabilities.
We base our outdoor curriculum on the Early Years Foundation Stage Frame Work.
From Playing Side by Side to Playing Together
Social skills bloom naturally in the open air. Toddlers who once played alongside one another begin to share discoveries — passing a watering can, taking turns feeding the ducks, or joining forces to dig for “treasure.”
As children grow, the garden becomes a place for imaginative play and teamwork. We provide the resources to create dens and support children in working together to care for plants. These shared moments help them understand cooperation, empathy, and the joy of belonging to a group.
A Place to Grow — in Every Sense
At Blue Windmill, we see how time outdoors supports every area of development — physical, emotional, social and cognitive. The outdoor learning for early years garden gives children space to think, move and connect in their own way, while practitioners gently guide and extend their learning.
In the heart of Rugby, our garden is more than greenery — it’s a growing space for confidence, creativity, and friendships that last long after the day is done.
