Curiosity Corner: A New Outdoor Learning Space at Blue Windmill Nursery

Our Curiosity Corner is a new nursery outdoor space here in Rugby, designed to invite children into slower, more thoughtful play. We’ve been working on it over the weekend, gently transforming part of our outdoor space into something a little different. It sits just under cover, making it usable in all weathers, and offers a calm contrast to the busier parts of the garden. We’d love to know what you think.

A quiet corner for curious minds

Every element has been chosen to feel purposeful, natural and open-ended.

There are baskets to explore, herbs to smell, books to share, and objects to handle and talk about. A simple bench creates space to sit together. A small “story chest” offers prompts for imagination. Even the bunting and textures overhead help soften the space and make it feel welcoming.

Nothing here is fixed in how it should be used. Children might sit and read, create their own stories, examine natural objects, or simply take a quiet moment.

Learning that starts with curiosity

This space reflects something important to us: that learning doesn’t always need to be busy or structured.

In the Curiosity Corner, children are encouraged to:

  • notice small details
  • ask questions
  • revisit ideas
  • develop language through shared moments

These quieter experiences are just as valuable as more active play. They help build confidence, communication and a sense of belonging.

A space that will keep growing

Like the rest of our garden, this is only the beginning.

We’ll continue to evolve the area over time — adding seasonal touches, introducing new objects, and responding to how the children choose to use it. Alongside this, we’re also beginning plans for a new growing garden, which will soon be fenced and developed as another hands-on learning space.

Come and see it for yourself

If you’re visiting the nursery, do take a moment to pause in the Curiosity Corner. It’s a small space, but it holds a lot of intention. We’re looking forward to seeing how the children make it their own.
