dens & play zones
Small spaces, big adventures
Our outdoor spaces at nursery are constantly evolving — a secret garden of discovery right here in Rugby. Every corner has a purpose, every path leads to play. From shaded dens to storybook bridges, the Blue Windmill garden invites children to explore, imagine and feel at home.
Familiar outdoor areas build confidence
At Blue Windmill, we believe young children grow best when they feel secure in their surroundings. We create smaller “zones” within the garden, each offering something a little different — places to return to, to make discoveries, and to share adventures with friends. The garden becomes familiar ground, and confidence blossoms from that sense of belonging.
Designed like a garden, loved like a playground
Landscape gardeners talk about zoning — creating spaces that flow together with purpose and variety. We’ve applied that same thinking to our nursery garden, with an emphasis on play-based learning.
Here you’ll find:
Billy Goat’s Gruff Bridge – for balance, storytelling and small-world adventures.
The Duck Pond – where we learn to care for our feathered friends.
Curiosity Corner – an undercover area for investigation and sparking the imagination.
Balance Beams – for steady steps, balance and coordination.
Reading Nook – a calm spot for reading, reflection or gentle conversation.
The Building Yard – a space for little engineers and problem solvers.
The Vegetable Patch – for digging, planting and noticing how things grow.
The Writing Shed – where we can choose freely from all kinds of mark making equipment.
The Den Workshop – where children work together to build, balance and explore.
The Garden Shop – a little place for conversation, imaginative games and open-ended role play.
The Potion Table – for mixing, pouring and hands-on discovery.
The Weather Station – a simple place to observe and record the elements.
Flower Borders – for exploring colour, scent and gentle minibeast hunts.
Dig and Discover Zone – designed for digging, scooping and transporting materials.
Each zone offers opportunities for sensory play, language, movement and early problem-solving — all key parts of the Early Years Foundation Stage.
Growing skills for life
As children move between the zones, they’re also moving through stages of development — from exploring and experimenting to expressing and reflecting. Our experienced nursery practitioners support these moments of learning naturally, encouraging curiosity and confidence in the outdoors.
It’s a garden designed not to look beautiful, but to nurture the imagination and independence of every child in our care.
Childcare in Rugby with outdoor learning at its heart
If you’re looking for childcare in Rugby that values outdoor learning as much as indoor comfort, Blue Windmill Day Nursery offers both. Our garden is designed to promote wonder — a place where every day brings something new to explore.
